Going South

And I don’t mean South Shore of Oahu.

For Traveling Thursday I thought I’d share a very special leg of our last trip (Summer 2006). Our one and only family trip to the Mainland that was not about visiting my relatives I California. For Daughter’s graduation celebration we went to the East Coast. After Boston, NYC, and DC; we rented a car and drove from DC to my sister’s in Florida. We stopped in Savannah, Georgia for three days and fell in love.

I’m used to the Pacific Coast Highway on the West Coast, so I had no idea that the nine hour drive down I-95 would look pretty much like this the whole way.

But we still enjoyed the green. The rivers and bridges. Next time I would plan ahead and know the local diners to stop at and get a better feel for the South. However, we made up for it our days in Savannah.

We went to Oatland Island and an animal preserve there.

We drove out to Tybee Island and got to see an East Coast beach.

And we hung out on River Street.

I loved getting to go to Paula Dean’s Restaurant, Lady and Sons. We also ate one night at a local place by our motel called Sticky Fingers that had really good BBQ.

I loved the historical feel of Savannah.

While we are in the South, I’d like to also invite to virtually travel over to visit Angie and Kathryn at their new upgraded literary home, Rose and Thorn. They are having their grand opening today. They are wonderful writers, and two of the nicest bloggers out there. I once asked Angie what Tony Chachere’s Creole seasoning was (she mentioned it in a post) and she sent me some! Now that’s nice. And yummy.

Happy virtual traveling. It’s almost the weekend!

Link up your travel posts, your staycation posts, or the favorite places you have in the place you call home. Then let’s take a virtual road trip. Aloha.

That looks like such a fun trip. I've only spent a small amount of time in the south ... I'd love to take a more leisurely trip and really have time to explore.

Next time I'll meet you in Savannah. I love it there. I've never been to the animal preserve or Tybee Island. I guess that means I have to go back. :-)

Charleston SC looks a lot like Savannah. When I lived in SC, I went drove through Savannah on my way to... Florida. And it makes a big difference (in time and view) if you take Route 1 South, which is what I did for part of that trip.
Great post, Pseudo.
I linked up. Didn't really travel anywhere... you'll see.

I know what you mean about the eastern seaboard. It is pretty much all the same. I have actually never been to Savannah, but my Dad loves it there! Next time you visit the East coast, let me know, we will have a blog get together!

I have only traveled the I-95 through the South(back up north to New England from Florida years ago in a tiny Subaru)with only one overnight stop somewhere in North Carolina.
I have always wanted to take a more liesurely trip down there again and Savannah is my dream location--lucky you for having already been there.(I'll have to try once to do what Only did--take the old Route 1 instead of I-95)

I've only driven through Savannah, a few times even, but never stopped to enjoy. Maybe next road trip (which won't be happening any time soon).

Oh Pseudo, you just made my day! I was born and raised in Savannah and think it one of America's most beautiful cities. I so miss the moss on the live oak trees and the stunning historic houses downtown. I used to be director of the River Street Association and loved First Saturday where we had artistic vendors from all over the east coast.
**sigh**

Savannah is a beautiful city; Beloved and I talked about going down to Charleston and Savannah for Christmas this year, but decided to remodel our bathrooms instead. Oh, well.

I hope everything is getting back on an even keel at home, hon.

Sounds like a fabulous trip. I've been lots of places on the east coast - but not Tybee Island. I love that you ate at Paula Dean's restaurant - I'd LOVE to do that!

I've never been to Savannah, but it is on "my list."
Gotta love your love for Tony Chachere's! I spent a good bit of time in New Orleans for work back in 1996 (wow, it was that long ago?) and was introduced to it then and it is now a staple in my house. Love it on tater tots :)

Savannah's a lovely little city, isn't it? Did you get to sit on Forrest Gump's bench? Oh, and my youngest almost went to college in Savannah because of Tybee Island...

I've always heard so much about Savannah but I've never been. I would love to go someday.

Oh, it warms my heart to know that you loved my neck of the woods. While I'm not in Savannah (it is a couple hours away), I do love the history and the people in the south. At least most of the time.

Have a great weekend!

I went there for my weekend honeymoon many moons ago. Living in Georgia, my kids learn about it in school--it is amazing to remember that Georgia was one of the original 13 colonies.

Old Dog and I did a guided walking tour of Savannah a few years ago, and it was the high point of our vacation. Lovely place!

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Isn't it amazing how different the colors of the Atlantic and the Pacific are? One is dark and greenish (though occasionally a kind of navy); the other so bright and blue...Thanks for sharing all the great photos!
