Conversation with my daughter last night…

Me (trying to catch up on blog reading).

Daughter comes into the office.

Mom, one of your former students is in my Woman’s Studies class.

Mmm. That’s nice. (Meanwhile I was reading this post of Motherhood in NYC. It you don’t read Marinka you should check her out. She is so, so funny. Great last blog to read before retiring if you need an uplift).

It’s weird running into your old students. Actually, this one is weird.

Yeah, well, at 150 students a year, over the course of many years, there’s bound to be all types.

No, this one is really weird. Kind of irritating.

I’m still only half listening. Daughter continues.

So, I’m sitting with my friend Brian, a few minutes before class starts, and this guy in front of us turns around and says, “Are you Ms Pseudo’s daughter?” And I say, ahh yeah. My friend Brian was in the middle of telling me a story, so we both just sit there awkwardly and your student keeps going.

Your mom was my teacher.

That’s nice.

I was in her class my senior year.

Ah, that’s nice.

She had cancer that year.

Mom, I swear to God, Brian had to cover his mouth and put his head down to keep from laughing. What am I supposed to say to that, “uh, yeah, I think I remember the year my mom had cancer??”

He probably just wanted to know if I was doing alright.

Yeah, well, maybe. But the next thing he says was “Did your mom’s hair grow back? She was bald when she was my teacher.” Brian’s head is down on the desk and his shoulders are shaking he is laughing so hard.

OK. I turn from the glare of the computer monitor. She has my attention and my mirth as well at this point.

Well did you laugh? Cause it is kind of funny when you put it like that.

She IS laughing, finally. Although, I'm pretty sure it is the first time she has laughed at this story.

I might be laughing right now while I’m telling you this. It is funny when I think about it. But I was actually kind of pissed off. I gritted my teeth and told him your hair had grown back and you were doing fine.

Is that it sweetie? Can I go back to reading?

MOM! Brian and I have switched where we sit. But your student keeps following us around and sitting right in front of us!

Persistent little fellow, is he not?

It is funny in that light. But did your daughter expect you to go to class and tell the kid to sit somewhere else? :)

Irish - I don't know what she expected! She did get a big laugh out of me. And I cannot for the life of me figure out ho the kid is.

Who needs Wenda stalking you when you have former students! LOL

I imagine that if there is one type of interruption that will prevent you from catching up on blog reading it will be some sort of former student. The scum.

I'm impressed that you managed to half listen without getting in to trouble. I always get into trouble when I attempt to blog-read and to engage in a conversation.

Hiya. Congrats! I nominated you for the 'I know your blog is fabulous award'. Come on by and take a look. Have a great weekend!

Didn't she get a name?

It is funny in retrospect, but I can see how it would have been upsetting to her. Thanks for the shout-out!

I think our kids wear this weird "teacher's kid" badge sometimes.

Isn't it weird how former students come out of the woodwork? I've been thinking of a few of mine and I know I remember them way more fondly than I interacted with them...

okay, I'm thinking Asperger's when I hear about this kid. Please say it is as I'd hate to think he's just a social idiot

Oh, Cairo - stalking is the word ; -)

stoneskin - I have been known to pretend to listen at times when I am blog reading. My kids are on to that. What with having my whole attention for mostof their lives, it is an adjustment for them.

Laura - why thank-you. I'llb e right over : - )

joanie - she forgot his name - but keeps trying to descibe him. "asian" over here that's the majority.

Marinka - you are welcome! I am getting addicted to your sense of humor.

Movie - Oh, my, yes, totally out of the woodwork. When I think of the numbers, it's mind blowing.

bern - I think you might have nailed it. I have had several autistic and Asperber's over the last few years and that was what I was thinking too.

It kind of sounds like the little weirdo feels he has made a connection. Since he lacks social skills, he figures he will latch on to your poor daughter and her friend. Ick!

Does the kid lack social filters, or what? Do you remember him at all? sounds like one I'd want to forget! BTW, please add your 5 cents' worth over at Sx3 today, OK?

Michelle said...

LOL! I'm pretty sure I've had that kid in my class too...

I think Jessica may have this one right. The kid has some sort of social issues. But it sounds like you had an impact on him. And it sounds like he cares.

Oh she sounds really bizarre!!

he did tell me his name, but by the end of the conversation i was so upset i forgot. i was just telling my mom because i thought she would laugh at the story... plus a few more incidents with this kid have occured.

and i often have kids come up to me to ask if i'm mrs. ____'s daughter, but not nearly as often as when i went to high school.

But you gotta love it just a little bit that she was offended and a wee bit pissed that this student was asking all these stupid questions.

Your daughter is awesome!

This is waht makes me happy i did my teaching internship in another province. Altho, try working in MH and realizing that there are three people you grew up with ON YOUR STREET that are MH frequent flyers. And you have a busybody, GossipQueen for a mother. Fun stuff.

SMB - if it is the kid I think it is, he has issues from a controling, domineering father.

Melissa, Michele, and Beth - Yeah, sounds like social issues AND trying to make friends at UH.

Pam - thank-you! My hair is back and I just was at the salon on Saturday!

mama- I do love it. My daughter is way nice and hardly gets riled up.

thistle - once again, are our mothers the same person in parallel universes???

I was waiting for the, '...and he reads your blog!' shoe to drop. Whew! Great story! I too am glad your hair grew back and you are better.

Poor kid! He probably has a crush on your daughter and thought that was his in. : )

FoN said...

Okay, a little weird, but I'm going to assume that he just really liked you and wanted to make sure you're okay now. Benefit of the doubt, and all that....

That kid is freaking me out a little. How weird.

Yeah, that would freak me out a little too. Weird kid.

But nice to know that you had such an impact that he remembers you and has so much concern, right?

Anonymous said...

I'm thinking that that was his weird way of expressing concern because nobody taught his how you are and aren't supposed to talk about certain things.

Hi! I'm a fellow SITSta. This story cracked me up. Did the guy finally stop following them around?
