Summer Break Final Countdown

I go back to work next week Tuesday. If you want to see how I feel about this, here are a couple of posts from a year ago, when I was a silent tree falling in the forest.

This summer, I spent the first five weeks of summer break mostly staying home. Decluttering, computer projects, house and yard projects. Lots of reading, writing, and quiet time. Long walks with Border Collie.

I’ve hardly been home the last few days.

Last Hoo Rahs.

The other day I had a Town day with Daughter. Lunch. Movie. Mall. Daughter also had a dentist appointment.

While she was at the dentist, I cruised the Mall.

I was walking past a women’s dress shop. Beautiful dresses here. They specialize in evening gowns and this store is the scene of my daughter’s senior prom dress purchase.

The store also has flowing, breezy, fancy, schmancy dresses. The type I could picture wealthy women wearing at pool parties.

Personally, I have never bought a dress for myself at this store.

As I walk past this store, a man stands outside, his back to the store window, watching his toddler daughter.

She is performing gymnastic type maneuvers in front of him. As I pass her she begins to add in a slightly loud song/chant to her antics.

I smile. I guess since I am not the one accountable for her, I think she’s pretty darn cute.

After I pass I hear her father tell her, “We never should have let Mommy go in this store.”

Please tell me you laughed at that! I would have stopped everything and busted a gut right there.

That is ADORABLE.

is your summer short? Do you 'year 'round'? We don't go back until 24 Aug (out 6 June)

I have a feeling the dad secretly loved his daughter's moves. I can't believe your summer is over already!

Yes, I cracked up laughing. Turned around and gave teh dad a big smile.

Yes we go modified year round and yes I hateit and would give up the quarterly breaks (where I end up grading) for a longer summer break.

And yes, I think the dad was secretly tickled with his daughter, but knew i another few minutes she would need more than a Mall song and dance to remain entertained.

Ha! I'm sure there was only so much toddler dancing he could appreciate before he looked at his watch and wondered how much LONGER his wife would dress shop. lol. What perfect timing that you overheard that little snippet.

Sorry you're summer is coming to an end so soon. Mine is not ending soon enough. ;)

I think it totally stinks that you have to go back to work in July. JULY?! I've really never heard of that. And that scene in front of the store is too cute! Glad you posted those links to your older entries, too.

LMAO - sounds like something my Dad would say to this day. But like he'd ever stop her.

My Mom is a teacher too. She starts back August 10th. The summers fly by....

I hardly get any time off! I have not had more than three days off in a row, in over 15 years!

I can't believe your summer is almost over already!!!! That is more crazy than how long we go!

It is amazing how fast the summer goes for kids and teachers! My aunt is a teacher they just got out of school, she just finished cleaning her room and all for the summer like a month ago and now she has 2 weeks before the school year starts. I am planning on helping her this year put her room back together before the kids come. Do you have to do that...strip the room, clean it, then move everything back in..or is it only Mississippi that makes the teachers do ALL the work!?!

LOL Mouth o' babes. Enjoy your last days of summer!

Really! Back to work so soon? Do you have a longer Christmas and Spring break than we do?

This just doesn't seem right!!

Wait! When does summer end these days!?!? I thought we didn't go back to school until after labor day!?! It's not even AUGUST!

I feel like I've been ROBBED!

Daddy should know that soon he will be outside doing the gymnastics while mother and daughter are inside twirling around in their fancy shmancy dresses.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Gosh...back at school so soon? Are you on a modified sched, or is this just the way the cookie crumbles? Enjoy your waning days of summer. That little girl reminds me of mine at a similar age. Always looking for the spotlight...

That's too cute and probably the sentiment of most men who are cruising the mall with their wives/girlfriends. :)

Hi there, I love your site! I barely got out of work and we go back in around mid August. =)

That is soo funny. I guess sometimes we get carried away when we go inside stores we enjoy.

ha! love it...I think summer has gone by too fast - I decided to keep J at home during the days I don't work and have loved every minute of it.

I haven't looked at my comments yet today so I don't know if you've been by today. If not .... you may want to swing in for a visit. Not trying to make you homesick and I know you've got beautiful beaches all around you ... But!

Oh, I know. Where has the summer gone? I'm already back in my room getting organized and evaluating the punks for next year. I keep getting more kids and my assistant just quit on Friday.

My kids start on Aug. 11th. Unbelieveable!

It feels like my kids have been out forever! Forever for parents, never long enough for teachers.

Incredible that you already have to go back to work so soon. It ruins my perception of this tremendously long and languid summer you teachers get. Of course, now I'm not as jealous so there's a payoff for ME. :)

Cute story about the kid. I love those tales.

He's probably right. :-)

Enjoy your last few days of vacation.

I went to your previous post from Monday July 20th and realized that the first day or two of your return is like repeating first day of orientation to a new job. That could be boring since you have been teaching for this long.

Regarding the Dad and daughter standing outside that pretty store, you actually escaped into a time warp. That was my father and me when we used to shop. It never failed at the mall when he would watch me, while Mom was in a dress store, Dad would say those same words. "Why did we let her go in there?"

Just went back and read the tale of the prom dress. OH MY GOSH...what a horrible friend! Lord, teenagers can be mean but that one gets a special prize! Your daughter sounds like a very classy young woman.

So school's starting again, huh?!

Do what you can.
