May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii...

I love May Day in Hawaii.

At Kapiolani Park there is a lei contest. The air is filled with the pungency of all the flowers, the bandstand has music playing, the lei makers and their booths are friendly and inviting. The leis are amazing.

For many years, my friends and I would attend the Brothers Cazimero concert at the Waikiki Shell. If we could not afford to go in, we would picnic outside after spending the day walking around the park and enjoying the leis.

Today, I am stranded at home with car issues. I was going to go to the festivities and take photos, video clips, save them for Travel Tip Thursday.

But all of this wonderfulness is going on and it is a beautiful day. Happy May Day to you all via YouTube. Enjoy.

Oh, how lovely to have Lei Day in Hawaii. Despite being at home, I hope you enjoyed it. We had a lovely warm day in Wisconsin, despite the extreme wind.

Does the rhyming of Lei and May have anything to do with it?
This and Macadamia nuts are some of the best Hawaiian things. Beaches and sunsets rate way up there too.

We had a lovely May Day. All day in the garden getting filthy, playing in the dirt, getting ready for flowers.

The leis are beautiful and the smell, OMGosh! The smell is unbelievable. It's been over 20 years and I still remember.

Lei Day sounds much better than May Day to me. Sorry you missed the festivities. Car trouble...ACK! Hate it.

Oh, how rotten to be stuck at home when you want to be out and about enjoying yourself!

One of the things I remember best about my first trip to Hawaii was driving past the plumeria fields on the Big Island, and how utterly heavenly they smelled.

Car trouble, the bane of our existance!
What a lovely May day tradition. Up here the kids at school still make May baskets, and at the elementary school they trek down the hill to set a wreath of flowers into the sea.
Happy May!

So, you wanted to get lei'd? That sounds a whole lot more fun than dancing around a pole.

Sorry about the car acting up.

Sounds as though your May is as it should be ~ we're still dealing with snow/slush and rain. Have a great week.

I didn't know that! I would love to be in Hawaii right now. Or anytime really. :)

You missed everything? That stinks completely! I had no idea there were that many varieties of leis as to have ribbons and awards for them. Fascinating and beautiful!

I want to be your next door neighbor. Seriously. I'd drive you down to the celebration and then we'd both get to enjoy it. Sigh, Cleveland is so far from Hawaii, it's just not right.
