Oahu's Waimea Bay

I know there are those of you out there who write your posts ahead of time and set them to go up at midnight. I know because midnight your time is early evening here if I'm comparing time to the East Coast.

I like to think that there are also those like me - who fly by the seat of their pants and post when and if they get time on the family computer. Which I did not get last night for Traveling Thursdays' post. "Luckily" for me, I often have insomnia. Figured since I cannot sleep at 3 AM, might as well get to it.

We love to go to Waimea Bay in the summer (Spring/Fall). A favorite snorkling beach. It is a stunning beach and the Bay feels like the biggest salt water pool on Earth. Often, dolphins frolic on the outskirts of the bay and once my son and his friend swam out to the dolphins (to the fear and amazement of my daughter who drove that day and felt repsonsible).

However, during the winter, when the waves come up monster size on the North Shore, Waimea Bay looks like this.

This shot is from the Quicksilver site, on this tab, you can view more photos from Tuesday's Eddie Aikau Memorial surf contest. I wish I could say I took off from work, spent the day on the North shore taking photos and videos for you folks. But you will have to settle for the professionals for your visuals.

Can you imagine being able to take a wipe out like that?

Travel Tip for today? Don't disregard Oahu when planning a vacation and think about a winter vacation. Heard about the rest of the country's weather on the news last night. It's gorgeous and in the 80's over here. Plus, if you come in the winter, you might get to see the big waves on Oahu's North Shore and maybe even a surf contest.

Link up you own post for some virtual traveling today with Mr. Linky. And feel free to grab the badge in the sidebar.

I really need to find my photos.

Oh I so needed to look at warm pictures today. It is so flipping cold today and the wind is wild. Guess what my husband made just made it home and now is sleeping. Yeah.. The car? Who knows..

For years, I've been trying to talk Beloved into going to Oahu, but he's always maintained that he's spent too much time there (he used to do a lot of business in Honolulu). However, on our next trip - whenever that may be in this economy - he has promised me at least two days on Oahu so I can visit my favorite high school teacher. :)

The diving looks spectacular! The wipeouts not so much! It's nice to see that there are people right there to help them if there's an injury.

Yikes!

That scares me!!!! If it is strong enough to snap a board...your face doesn't have a chance!!!

Wow. I would love to swim with dolphins. Or swim at a beach in Hawaii. Or just visit with you, period.

OMG, I would love to see waves like that in person!
And those snorkeling shots, so cool. We snorkled in Barbados last winter and saw all these colorful fish and sea turtles; I can't imagine living where that stuff is right there!

Wow and WOW! I'm signing up for this trip, as soon as I can. Great ideas for winter vacationing.

p.s. We have the best weather for summer vacations: temperate, clear, sunny, good for fishing, hiking, canoeing, horse-back riding, wind-surfing.

Our lodging rates are modest compared to other places on the Pacific.

Try us out.

I have never been on a vacation, but if I ever do (sometime in my old age) that sounds like the place for me. Nice and warm! I always wanted to try snorkling.

Love love love Hawaii. Thank you so much for showing us a little bit more of your island.

Oh, my. That split-in-half surfboard nearly did me in. Gotta admire the tenacity of the surfers though, nearly as strong as the ocean herself. Which is so beautiful, just like your island. sigh...

I don't think i'll ever get there but it's certainly pretty

I was in Oahu about 1994, stayed in Honolulu, had a guy friend at the Navy base.Gorgeous beaches, adorable geckos and loved the snorkeling in a very small bay. I just want you to know that I am a wing it person- rarely prep, proofread or draft and I do have to both find a few precious moments and share my family computer (altho I like to think of it as mine, lol).

I want to go stay in Hawaii for the winter! And winters really aren't that bad in Georgia - but you still have me beat... hands down!

When are the whales there? I have never been able to visit in the winter because my daughter is still in school.

Damn, this would totally fulfill one of the things on my Christmas wish list. Looks amazing!

You've inspired me to write about past trips. Hope I linked up correctly this time.

I live a few miles from another ocean and have never surfed. Snorkeling made me claustrophobic...like I couldn't breath when I put the mask over my face. So I live vicariously through the adventures of others. Those waves look pretty cool to me...from here...;)

OMG, I'd love to see actual sea turtles... but since I'm afraid of the water (as in oceans and pools), guess I'll have to keep relying on the aquariums, darn it!

Our next trip to Hawaii is going to be in Oahu. And I'm stopping by your house for a visit!

that water is gorgeous! snorkeling freaks me out, I wish it didn't and wish I could scuba one day. But I would be panic attacking right and left. Have a wonderful weekend!

Good lord! If I didn't drown surfing, i'd die of a heart attach in those waves! WOW!
Have a great weekend.

I cannot imagine the nerve it takes to climb that wave! It would be very easy to get killed on a wave like that!

Frolicking with dolphins?? Is that really possible??
You make a very good tour guide and promoter for where you live, but I guess living where you do that can be an easy thing.
Don't know that I'll ever get over to any of your islands(would love to), but enjoyed this little trip for now(those waves...are amazingly frightening)

BTW, I am a "blog when I can and just make it up as I go along" blogger, too.

I like your idea about collecting travel stories--and thanks to Jen for posting about it--I've often posted about trips (mine are often strange and generally outdoor related). One day I will get to Hawaii and look into the mouth of an active volcano and dive in such clear waters, but think I'll forgo the surfing. I'll link up to one of my past travel stories.

Swimming with the dolphins. That's high on my list of things to do before I die -- and while I'm in Hawaii visiting you . . . :-)

Wow, what a drastic change in location, calm to "holy crap, those waves are HUGE!". It was in the 80's here today too, I'm ready for the cold.

When it comes to blogging, I'm a fly by the seat of my pants blogger. Unfortunately.

And I live for the day I can return to Hawaii. Next time I want to visit every single island. I guess that would be when we hit the lottery. Ha!

Will I sound like a cranky old lady if I say I just did not want to brave the traffic that day???

But heard all about it from my staff. Some who parked miles away and hitched a ride in :)

Crazy young kids.

I've missed you. Hope that you enjoy your winter break!!
