Friday Foto: And The Winner is...
Lucky#17: True Random Number Generator Min:1 Max:82 Result: 17 Powered by RANDOM.ORG
Comment number 17 happens to be Smart Mouth from Words of Wisdom from a Smart Mouthed Broad. Her blog says she's gone fishing for the weekend. Hmpf.
Well, I set off shopping for exotic prizes for her package on a sunny Saturday mid-morning. Only for the love of blogging or out of town guest do I brave the swap meet.
Baskets made into purses? Maybe...
Da slippah no wear sign?

Or who wouldn't want a lovely bongo drum?
Local snacks....
I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable buying anyone a Brazilian bikini....
There were a lot of choices out there at the swap meet.
Next, I hit the local market with a huge Asian selection. I know SMB likes to cook and thought a few odd ingredients might be fun for summer cooking.
You can click on any of the pictures to enlarge them, but the grocery items are fun to take a gander.
Filipino?
Hot sauces?

Well, I can't post what I ended up buying for the Hawaii goodie box cause I want SMB to be surprised.

Friday Foto: Mother's Day 2009
Mother's Day was a quiet, peaceful, relaxing day of just my daughter and me. My husband was working (Mother's Day is huge in hotels and restaurants). I'd go into the story of how Son turned out not to be with us and make it light and funny, but I have a headache this morning. Let's just say it was all good.
Daughter and I got to the North Shore around 10 AM and apparently nearly everyone else was taking their mom to a hotel or restaurant brunch because the beach was nearly deserted.
Right after I took this picture, I jumped in the water and BC came flying in after me. Daughter and I played catch with his tennis ball and he played Monkey in the Middle. He can swim like a little steam engine when a ball is at stake.
Our little spot of heaven for the day.
BC and I took off for a nice long beach walk. Summer weather is here. It was so hot there were shimmer waves coming up off the sand and we had to jump in the water every ten minutes.
This family of paddle boarders are letting mom have some ocean space to herself.
We left early to beat the crowd to Hali'ewa for dinner. We frequent a Mexican restaurant that has some tables outside we can have BC join us. We did not, however, anticipate how freaking hot it was to sit with a brand new sunburn in the hot sun and eat spicey food. After I downed this here margarita, we got some to go boxes.
And finished our dinner at this picnic table.

Friday Foto: Déjà vu
I think falling in love is a little like having visitors. You push the things you have to do aside and make the time to participate in life. The balance shifts in favor of fun and recreation, of sights and sounds and sensory perception. Slow conversations and leisurely meals. Mixing things up and staying away from routines….
Of course it is a big cosmic joke because when the visitors leave, or when the honeymoon is over, real life and routine become a juggling act where mortgages, careers, children, elderly relatives, schedules, housework….fuck I’m tired just by putting it all down on paper. Where was I? Oh yeah, with all the balls in the air the ones that tend to get dropped are the leisurely ones. At least, it did for us. Not absolutely, but enough.
I’ve written this before, but surviving cancer helped me put things back into perspective. To let some things go, to make time for others. To appreciate the little moments and figure ways to fit in more of them. I got a reminder of that that last month. That scare has helped me once again slow down my frenzied tendencies.
One late afternoon last week that I spent with my daughter gave me a strong feeling of déjà vu. I picked her up in town from work and we were going to see a play together. It was preview night and therefore was free. We wanted to get something to eat, maybe a little on the treat side, but within budget.
We picked up some food to go and headed out for a picnic on the wall overlooking the ocean as you drive around Diamond Head.
When my husband and I were dating, we had many a lunch date on that wall. Afterwards, we would break out the backgammon board. We’d straddle the wall, sitting in one direction for an hour, then we'd switch places so we did not tan on only one side. We would play so many games we called them tournaments, and we'd place bets. If neither of us had to work that night, we’d do this all the way from lunch until sunset. Time moved slowly.
While I sat there having a picnic dinner with my daughter I thought about the me that had sat on that same spot, over twenty years before....
The view.
The path.
The play was free. The Thai food to go was $13.27. The drinks from the coffee house one block over from the Thai restaurant were $6.75. The view was free. Our night out came in at just $20, so I'm cross listing this as a Money in the Bank post. Lychee iced tea (me) and iced latte (daughter)
Not the greatest foodie shot. Sorry folks.

Friday Foto: Opera Workshop
When I was taking my daughter to dance classes and going to her recitals I had no idea where it would lead. Her first recital she did not want to go on stage - she was scared stiff. I watched with the sure expectation she would take one look at the crowd and come running back into the wings, tears streaming down her face, making sure I knew that I had emotionally traumatized her for life by insisting she do the yearly recital "just once and if it's not your thing, you never have to do it again."
She came running back alright, but she was grinning from ear to ear and saying,
Again Momma! I want to go on again!
That's it baby. You are done for tonight. So you liked being onstage?
I LOVED IT!! When can I do it again?
Next year's recital.
Why do I have to wait so long? I want to go NOW.
This beautiful 19 year old college sophomore.
For her opera workshop class they did a recital. Dad was working. Son was with his friends thankful we did not invite him.
I loved every minute of the workshop, especially when it was my girl's turn to be onstage. Afterwards we were both hungry since we had not eaten dinner. We splurged and went to a restaurant we had both been dying to try. It's somewhat new (OK, opened several years ago, but we rarely go out). The restaurant is known for serving up local ingredients and my daughter and I can go and not spend a fortune as we don't eat like the boys do. We shared an appetizer and an entry, with tea (I had brown rice tea, daughter had chamomile) and thoroughly enjoyed each other's company and the ambiance of the restaurant. It was perfect after a night of opera workshop performance.

Lots of yummy veggies that I did not know.
And now for a little song and dance...

Spin Cycle Meets Friday Foto
The Spin Cycle this week is manners. I was going to do a post on how a lot of teens leave their manners at home when they come to school. I swear we should have hidden cameras and then do an open house where we show the parents what their kids act like at the taxpayers’ expense.
But that topic might be better served in appetizer portions. One transgression at a time.
So I’ll go ahead and zero in the microscope on my own family. Teen boy to be exact. He’s one of those cases where my husband and I are constantly on the front lines of the manners battle field. Usually wondering how and when teen boy turned into such an ass.
Now I know to count my blessings. The boy has good grades, hasn’t given us any major trouble…. BUT, OH. MY. GOD. If the kid could think for one second before he opened that mouth our world would feel like a breezy day in a field of wild flowers. Instead of the jagged rocks of irritation hell.
Son, please go clean the bathrooms.
Your mother cleans the bathrooms.
Don’t be a smartass.
Your mother is a smartass.
The other day he invited two friends over for dinner. Now, according to my daughter, who has been stuck in the car with them all, these two boys are as sassy and as thinks-they-are-funny as our boy. However, at dinner at our house, they were well-mannered and quite capable of interesting and appropriate dinner conversation. When I was asking my son to help them serve themselves he said something rude and sassy to me, thinking he was funny.
I did not want to knock his head off in front of these two kids I barely knew. So instead, I stood there and let my blood pressure sky rocket and my head turn into a purplish cartoon image of itself.
Son, I don’t want to embarrass you in front of your friends, so I would appreciate it if you think before you open your mouth.
To his friends I said
You met his sister, right? So you know they were taught manners, even though Son is not representing the family well right now.
One of his friends turned to me and said,
He seems to save it for you. Our parents all like him and he doesn’t act like this at all around them.
I asked Son later that week, on a day where he was being pleasant and lovely company,
Why or why do you act like such an ass sometimes at home? I miss this you.
To which he replied
Sorry. I like to try my comedy on you guys cause I know you’ll love me even if I piss you off.
The many sides of Son , as seen through before he leaves for prom pictures.

Friday Foto: Happy Hour
Don't forget to enter the Hawaii Goodie Box Contest.
Last month a friend came to visit. First night we stopped in Chinatown for martinis (hi Vodka) at Indigo's and then went to Little Village for Chinese food. Why do we always live better when we have visitors?

Friday Foto : Hiking Kuliou'ou Ridge Trail
Spring Break is almost over. I spent way too much of it doing forgetable things like house fixing up projects, grading, prepping lessons, blah, blah blah....
We celebrated our 20th anniversary with a couple of lunch dates. Same with hubs birthday.
Oh. I read all four books in the Twilight series. Days lounging around in PJ's with Bella, Edward, and Jacob.
My friend P called and asked if I had anything fun planned and I did not and she asked if I did one thing what would I like it to be and I told her hiking.
Be careful what you ask for.
I've been all sassy pants with my speed walking and beach walking. P took me a couple of miles UPHILL to the top of Kuliou'ou Ridge. I was a bit pathetic in the amount of times I had to slow or stop and catch my breath. Casual chatting was out about 20 minutes into the hike. My digital camera stopped working at the beginning of the break so I asked P to bring hers. After stopping her three times to take a photo she let me carry it. Which gave me a good excuse to stop some more.
The bushes and ferns were incredibly beautiful. Here we are starting to get a glimpse towards Hawaii Kai.

Hawaii Kai and Kokohead Crater in the background.

These berries were all over the place.

Yeah, there were several places like this. This is one of the last hills before the top. On the way down I slipped once and fell on my ass. P was surprised to see that after that I chose to sit on my ass and slide down. It was actually more fun that way.

I loved this tree. I thought it looked like something that could come to life, shake my hand for making it this far, and toodle on behind me if it felt so inclined.

Amazing, isn't it? 1,929 feet above sea level.

Seriously. I want to go again. It might take me longer than most (I was not so thrilled with the two twenty-someting young ladies who blazed past us on a steep hill, talking nonstop...nor the woman with her four children who also passed me up), BUT I MADE IT!!
Don't expect Friday Fotos like this too often. I have to recup you know.

Friday Foto: Happy Birthday BC
Border Collie turned two years old last week. I'd like to have made a photo gallery of him since he was a puppy, but I'd need a scanner. Or I'd have to find the CD's where I saved the digital pics from before we got this computer. Too lazy for all that...
BC has been one big giant blessing to this family. We got him after my one year survivor anniversary. It was a rough year. March 2006 was the breast cancer diagnosis. March 2007, while I was still recovering from the treatments, our house was burglarized. They cleaned us out. The old man (14 year old border collie) was mostly blind and partially deaf and was in the house the whole time. We were thankful the fuckwads didn't hurt the old dog. But we figured he needed a buddy to help guard the house (we also got an alarm).
BC barks like crazy if anyone he doesn't know gets close to the house. But he has fit into our family in so many other ways. He loves the teens with all his heart. He is my walking companion. He "grooms" the old man whenever he can (old man growls at him a lot). And he is the best beach dog ever (nonobjective opinion).
Loves to swim.
Posing for a picture.
Gettting ready to play fetch.
Sighing over the long car ride.
More fetch.
Up close and personal.
Making sure the boy came out of the water all OK.
Stiking a pose.
Looking good.
Home sweet home.
